Tottenham star Victor Wanyama has dismissed suggestions he could be tempted to leave White Hart Lane for Manchester United this summer, reports Goal.com.
The Kenyan captain arrived at Spurs in 2016 and was a regular in his first season before injury blighted the recent campaign. Nonetheless there have been rumours in recent weeks to the effect that the Red Devils were trailing Wanyama, with Liverpool and Chelsea also said to be interested.
But in an interview with Goal.com in his native Nairobi, the 26-year-old Wanyama said: “I still have a contract with Spurs and that is what I want to see through. I did not have a good season with the team because of injury and my aim now is to work hard during this break and return for next season even stronger and help them perform even better.”
When asked whether United had been in contact, the defensive midfielder replied: “I don’t respond to rumours and all those are rumours to me… I am not aware of anything and I am very fine and happy where I am.”
Talks start over Alderweireld deal
One Spurs player who could be on his way to Old Trafford, however, is Toby Alderweireld, with the Daily Mirror reporting that Tottenham “have opened negotiations with Manchester United” for the Belgium international defender.
Alderweireld, who is out of contract in 2020, has failed to reach an agreement with Tottenham over a new deal, and the club is ready to sell him this summer while they can still get a good price.
The Mirror claims that initially Tottenham had slapped a £55m price tag on Alderweireld but now “chairman Daniel Levy is believed to be seeking closer to the £75m Liverpool paid Southampton for fellow centre-back Virgil van Dijk in January”.
Fred set for medical next week
Meanwhile the Daily Express claims that United are “close to tying up a deal” for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, and he could arrive in the city as early as next week to undergo a medical.
The Brazilian playmaker is valued at £53m but that is a price Jose Mourinho is apparently prepared to pay for the 25-year-old.
The Express says that the United gaffer has “prioritised” the signing of a midfielder in order to strengthen the spine of his side, and Mourinho wants to get the deal done before the World Cup kicks off in June.
That will mean dealing with Fred’s representatives, led by former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva, but reports suggest that the ex-Gunner is already in England to negotiate terms with United.
