Tamil film industry condemns police action

It was an inhuman act, says Nadigar Sangam

In the last 30 years, the Tamil film industry has always enjoyed a close and polite relationship with the ruling party – be it the AIADMK or the DMK, barring a few exceptions. Since the death of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, more and more film personalities have become vocal in criticising the functioning of the State government.

However, the recent brutal killing of more than 10 protesters against the Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi by police has had leading actors roundly condemning the police opening fire on protesters that killed at least 10, besides injuring many and the State government.

Petition to Governor

In a statement on Tuesday, Nadigar Sangam condemned the police violence on protesters and called it ‘an inhuman act.’

Nadigar Sangam president Nasser and general secretary Vishal presented a petition to Governor Banwarilal Purohit.

Mr. Nasser said the office bearers would meet on Thursday to decide on the next course of action.

Mr. Vishal also strongly condemned the Thoothukudi killings and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene. “What is the need for bureaucrats of the State and others to save Sterlite?” he wondered.

Treasurer Karthi said the opening of fire made one wonder if this was a democratic country. In a video, veteran actor Sathyaraj also raised a question: “Who is important: corporate bosses or our Tamil brethren?”

Actor Arvind Swami also tweeted that he was deeply saddened.
