Pacifica Graduate Institute, a WASC-accredited graduate school offering masters and doctoral degree programs in depth psychology, mythological studies, and the humanities, announces legendary author, activist, pioneer and scientific advisor Dr. Vandana Shiva as the 2018 Commencement Speaker and recipient of an honorary doctorate degree. On Saturday, May 26th, 2018, Pacifica Graduate Institute will present Dr. Shiva with the highest honor given by the school, an honorary doctorate degree, during the annual commencement ceremony.

Pacifica Graduate Institute is inviting the greater Santa Barbara community to “An Evening with Vandana Shiva” at the historic Lobero Theatre on Saturday, May 26. The evening, hosted by Dr. Stephen Aizenstat, Founding President and Chancellor, and Dr. Joseph Cambray, President and CEO, will offer a VIP Reception, followed by Dr. Shiva's talk on "Seeds of Hope." A question and answer session will follow Dr. Shiva's talk. Tickets for the event are free. Limited seats are available and an RSVP is required.
Dr. Shiva trained as a physicist and did an interdisciplinary doctorate on ‘Hidden Variables and Non-Locality in Quantum Theory’ at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. She is Founder/Director of the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology and Navdanya, a movement for seed saving and ecological agriculture. She is the author of numerous books including Staying Alive, Ecofeminism, Seed Sovereignty and Food Security: Women in the Vanguard (Ed.), Soil Not Oil, Earth Democracy and Who Feeds the World. For four decades of dedication to independent and ecological research, Dr Shiva has been honored with numerous awards including The Right Livelihood Award, The Sydney Peace Prize, The Fukuoka Prize and the Lennon-Ono Peace Prize.
Dr. Shiva combines sharp intellectual enquiry with courageous activism, and her work spans teaching at universities worldwide to working with peasants in rural India. Time Magazine identified Dr. Shiva as an environmental ‘hero’ in 2003, and Asia Week has called her one of the five most powerful communicators in Asia. In November 2010, Forbes Magazine identified Dr. Shiva as one of the Seven Most Powerful Women on the Globe.
