Active operations in J&K hit after ‘ceasefire’

The Centre’s directive to halt security operations in Jammu and Kashmir during the holy month of Ramzan has put search operations against militants on hold.
Army, J&K Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officials said security forces have completely stopped active operations and are not taking any action on inputs regarding militants which they continue to get through technical surveillance and human intelligence. However, they said, arrests of militants, stone pelters and overground workers of militants will continue.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said during his visit to Kashmir that the decision of non-initiation of combat operations was taken to give a chance of confidence, stability and development to every youth and resident of Kashmir .
J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, who had appealed to the Centre after an all-party meeting in Srinagar earlier this month to declare ceasefire during Ramzan, thanked the PM for taking this “difficult and brave decision”. She said that mothers in Kashmir would be praying for Modi and sleeping calmly knowing that their sons wouldn’t be killed. However, Pakistan, she said, had not responded positively so far.
“This is an opportunity for everybody to come back and join the mainstream,” J&K’s director general of police SP Vaid told ET.
“There is a whole world waiting for them on the other side. They are our citizens, our people. For the larger interest of people, in the holy month of Ramzan we will not carry out any active operations.” Vaid, however, said that operations along the Line of Control or uninhabited areas may continue.
