A portion of Robert Sobukwe Road near Cape Town International Airport has been closed as a result of protest action, a City official said on Wednesday night.

City traffic services spokesperson Maxine Jordaan said the road was closed between Borcherds Quarry and Stellenbosch Arterial roads.

Western Cape traffic chief Kenny Africa said 35th Avenue was closed at Bishop Lavis Drive and Stellenbosch Arterial was closed at Erica Drive, towards Bishop Lavis.

Vehicles were being diverted to alternative routes.

It is understood that a traffic light was set alight, while burning tyres were placed across the road and passing vehicles were stoned.

The reason for the protest was not immediately clear.

In Parkwood, Jordaan said stones were being thrown at vehicles at the intersection of Prince George Drive and Hyde Road.
