Uttarakhand High Court today asked the state governmentto pay a compensation of Rs 25 lakhin one go or a pension of Rs 11,000 per month to a deaf and dumb inmate of a shelter home who was raped andforced to undergo an abortion.
A division bench of justices Rajeev Sharma and Sharad Sharma issued the direction while hearing a petition relatedto the episode which occurred at Dehradun-basedNari Niketan a couple of years ago.
They directed the Children's Welfare Committee chairperson to pay either Rs 25 lakh to the victim at one go or a pension of Rs 11,000 per month.
The high court said an account can be openedin a nationalised bank in the name of the victim for the purpose.
The court also issued a number of instructions for proper care and protection of inmates living in such institutions.
The court also directed the National Institute For Visually Handicapped to suspend a blind music teacher named Ramesh Chandra Kashyap, who is the main accused in the case.
