CORALVILLE — Authorities are investigating an assault on a correctional officer at the Iowa Medical Classification Center in Coralville, according to a news release from the Iowa Department of Corrections on Wednesday.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m., Tuesday. The inmate was refused directives from the prison guard, and then rushed the guard while “swinging closed fists” as the guard approached, according to the news release.

“When the two came into direct contact with each other, they began to struggle on the ground where the inmate landed several closed-fist strikes to the top of the officer’s head,” according to the statement.

Other staff and an inmate came to the officer’s assistance, and brought the situation under control, according to the news release. The guard was brought to the hospital and found to have no significant injuries.

Neither the name of the guard or inmate were not disclosed.
