ALBANY — Gov. Andrew Cuomo is reminding New York's health insurers that they are required under state law to cover comprehensive breastfeeding support and counseling as well as equipment and supplies without copays, coinsurance or deductibles.

The reminder comes more than a month after Anthem, the nation's second-largest insurer, announced it was slashing reimbursement for breast pumps, which allow new mothers to pump and store breast milk and are crucial for working moms.

"New York is a leader in the fight for equality and we will continue to stand up to help ensure new mothers receive the support and services they deserve," Cuomo said in a statement. "With this action, insurers are reminded that they are required to provide coverage for lactation support services, helping mothers to care for themselves and their children without the financial burden of co-pays and deductibles."

Under New York Insurance Law, insurers must cover maternity care including lactation support services such as counseling, education and training in breast- and bottle feeding, and breastfeeding equipment such as pumps.

"Educating women on the benefits of breastfeeding and supporting new mothers in their decision to breastfeed are essential to promote the health of babies," said Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul.
