Bhopal: MP bans interstate horse purchase without proper checkups


Bhopal: To check the spread of contagious Glanders, Animal Husbandry ministry has banned the purchase of horses from other states without proper checkups in MP. Minister for Animal Husbandry Antar Singh Arya said, “To check the spread of contagious Glanders disease. We do not have any other option but to ban the purchasing the animals without their health check -ups. ”

Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) ordered a ban on the movement of horses and related class of animals, their exhibition at fairs and festivals and horse races at sports events. BMC adopted this measure after a horse in the Kaji Camp-Bafna Colony area was found to be affected with Glanders. It is in line with the notifications and circulars issued by the central government and state government for control of Glanders disease as well as other contagious diseases.

About Glanders


Glanders is an infectious disease by the bacterium Burkholderia mallei. It’s primarily a disease affecting horses, but can also spread to donkeys, mules, goats, dogs and cats. As per veterinary experts, Glanders can even be passed on to humans, through contact with affected animals, particularly from nasal discharge of infected animal.
