Carl William Harder, 85, died Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at the Village Nursing Center in Indianola following an extended illness.
Visitation will be held at the Phillips Family Center, 605 Second Ave., Vinton, from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 25. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 26, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton, with Pastor Chip Rife officiating. A luncheon will follow at Central Presbyterian Church in Newhall. Committal services will be held at New Sweden Lutheran Cemetery near Lockridge following the luncheon. A memorial fund has been established for the Newhall First Responders, Hospice of Iowa or Central Presbyterian Church.
Carl was born on Nov. 13, 1932, in Muscatine, the son of Herman and June (Steele) Harder, and graduated from Muscatine High School. Following graduation, Carl served his country in the U.S. Army.
He received his teaching degree from Parsons College and his M.A. degree from Northeast Missouri State, now Truman State University, in Kirksville, Mo. On Sept. 2, 1956, he was united in marriage to Doris Allerdice. Carl taught math at Newhall High School and Benton Community High School for over 30 years.
He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, the Couples Club and the John Ward McGranahan American Legion Post 67 of Newhall. Carl enjoyed bowling and was an avid and accomplished golfer. He was a member of the Vinton Country Club and Tara Hills Country Club through the years. He also enjoyed making and repairing golf clubs in his spare time.
He is survived by his children, Alan (Karen) Harder of Indianola and Kate (Jim) Clark of North Liberty; his grandchildren, Denise (John) Keim, Matthew Harder, David Harder and Cassandra Pantel; and his sister, Mary Jane Mardesen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife of 50 years, Doris.
