The CPI(M) today said if workers' movements are able to channel "discontent" against the Narendra Modi government, the Left will be able to work out electoral tactics to pool anti-BJP votes in every state for the next Lok Sabha election.
In an editorial in the latest edition of party organ 'People's Democracy', former general secretary Prakash Karat said the country would see "more powerful united actions of working people" in the coming months.
"Such united struggles and movements should be able to gather the discontent and channel it towards the alternative programme of the Left and democratic forces. If we succeed in this endeavour, the stage will be set for working out electoral tactics which will help to maximise the pooling of the anti-BJP votes in each state during the Lok Sabha election," the editorial said.
On the completion of the NDA's fourth year in power at the Centre, Karat said the recent developments in Karnataka underlined how "the Modi-Amit Shah duo are bent upon subverting all institutions of democracy in their drive to establish total supremacy".
Attacking the Centre, he claimed after four years of BJP rule, the economic situation in the country had further deteriorated and farmers' distress because of falling prices and growing indebtedness had grown.
"The key link at this juncture is to gather the growing discontent against the BJP rule especially due to the worsening conditions and threats to the livelihood of the people," he said.
Referring to protests called by the Jan Ekta Jan Adhikar Andolan, an umbrella body of over 100 mass organisations, Karat said other movements being organised by farmers and trade unions would culminate in a 'mazdoor kisan' (worker-peasant) rally in Delhi on September 5.
