MPs will have to agree to pay £39bn Brexit bill before they have seen UK/EU trade deal, admits minister

MPs will have to agree to pay the £39billion Brexit bill before they have seen a formal draft of Britain’s new trade deal with the European Union, ministers have admitted.

The Government has long maintained payment of the divorce settlement will be linked to agreeing to new trading arrangements with the bloc.

But Suella Braverman, a Brexit minister, admitted there are currently no cast iron conditions in the withdrawal agreement which explicitly link the two issues.

She suggested the Government could come up with a set of conditions which would need to be met before payments are made but she refused to guarantee that they would be brought forward.
