Doctors turn students for the sake of sustainable menstruation

‘The Greener Doctrine’, a month-long awareness campaign, has spread across the country

The month-long national campaign, The Greener Doctrine, aimed at spreading the message of sustainable menstruation among doctors is nearing completion as it leads up to the World Menstrual Hygiene Day, which is observed on May 28.

The message

With a message of managing menstruation in a healthier, more hygienic and eco-friendly manner, it is the doctors who are spearheading the campaign across the country.

The campaign — named Green The Red — is a venture that promotes social, economic and environmentally sustainable menstruation choices.

It is supported by the the Public Awareness Committee of the Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI).

Meenakshi Bharath, who is part of The Greener Doctrine, told The Hindu that the initiative began as an awareness drive to inform doctors that products promoting sustainable menstruation are available. “We need medical professionals to inform their patients how good these products are, how they can benefit by using them and how their periods can become comfortable,” she said.

She said that with the help of FOGSI, the campaign has taken a life of its own with sessions being held in Bhopal, Surat, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Patna, Varanasi, Ratlam, Kolkata, Chennai, Kukatpally, Solapur, Aurangabad, Bharuch, Alwar, Kalaburagi, Shillong and Noida.

“Part of the problem, we realised, was that people did not know where products promoting sustainable menstruation, such as reusable cloth pads and menstrual cups, were available. Now, many doctors have started keeping these products in their clinics and hospitals,” she said.
