From equations to motifs

Meet Vidushini Prasad who propagates Madhubani art in her own way

Vidushini Prasad is a Madhubani artist from Bihar. “It is the state from where the art form originated,” says the artist, who has exhibited her works at several art galleries across the country. Though she dabbled in Madhubani during her college days, it was chemistry that drew her away from the art. The post graduate in chemistry soon found herself working as a science teacher and “forgot” all about Madhubani. “It was only after my son’s birth that I quit my job and took to painting intensely. I did everything from water colours and oils, and abstracts to nature,” recalls the Central Cottage Emporium empanelled Mithila artist.

“It was the intrinsic motifs of Madhubani art and what they symbolise that captivated my heart. Though many use motifs of birds and animals, deities form a huge part of this art. Madhubani is part of our rich heritage. We should preserve it. I wish every parent introduces their children to this art form. Maybe someone will take it up as their passion and will carry this art forward,” believes the artist, who also conducts umpteen workshops across the city, not just demonstrating the art but also giving her students a slice of the art’s history and significance.

Vidushini is associated with A Hundred Hands and has been invited by Fabindia to give a demo of Madhubani art at their varied outlets. Some of her works are available on FineArtAmerica and she is also a part of Novica.com (in association with National Geographic) which promotes artisans, she says. Besides this, Eka Lifestyle also “commissioned me for their signature Mithila Ganesha collection. Some of my exclusive works are available at their their Bengaluru outlets,” she says.

She then adds that she manages a “Madhubani painting group with over 18,000 members from around the world. I get queries from artists and those who wants to go into this on a regular basis and I try and help all of them in whatever little way I can,” she smiles.
