I have known Mike Foote for several years and have approached him many times regarding legislation that I was interested and sometimes helped write. Even though I was confident of Mike's support on immigration and social justice issues, I always knew he would ask some tough questions because he would think through all sides of the issues. He was often very helpful to the success of the campaigns I was working on.
I have been disturbed by comments regarding Mike's experience that have been in opposition to his becoming our next DA. First, his work on fracking is a very positive reason for voting for him. Not because of fracking but because it clearly shows his dedication to an issue that is extremely important to Boulder County and our health. Importantly, crimes committed by anyone including the oil and gas industry should be investigated and if appropriate, prosecuted.
His experience in the Legislature where he has consistently supported social issues, community health and personal freedom can be very important. DA Stan Garnett's office introduced the first bill in Colorado to specifically protect workers against wage theft. The success of such bills that protect members of our community would be much enhanced by Mike Foote's legislative experience and contacts. We must expect the DA's office to effectively take positions on legislation important to the community.
When meeting with an immigrant, Mike stated that when recommending sentencing it is important to consider the impact on others besides the convicted person. In a time of long sentences benefiting only private prisons this is important to all communities.
Mike is much better known in the community than his opponent and understands the community through numerous town hall meetings and small group meeting with minority residents of Boulder County.
