Amherst County High School welding students competed in the first local “Welding Wars” welding competition hosted by Central Virginia Community College on April 27.
The event, which drew high school students from local school divisions as well as college students and professional welders, included a question-and-answer panel on the life of a welder.
Six local businesses were on hand to accept resumes and interview contestants and area career and technical education directors were impressed with the students’ workmanship, according to Craig Maddox, supervisor of career and technical education, history and elective programs in Amherst County schools.
Holden Bryant, a junior, placed first in the Welding Level 1 competition and Cody Walker, a senior, placed third. Dakota Holmes, a senior, placed first place in the Welding 2 competition and Michael Huffines, a senior, placed in second.
