Qualifier 1, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai 22 May, 2018

Toss won by Chennai Super Kings (decided to bowl)

Chennai Super Kings beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 2 wickets

Man of the Match: Faf du Plessis

Highlights

22:56(IST)

Cricketnext’s IPL expert Aakash Chopra: Carlos Braithwait bowling the 18th over. Kaul bowling the 19th ahead of Bhuvneshwar. Rare captaincy errors from one of the finest captains in the Indian Premier League.

22:55(IST)

As for Sunrisers Hyderabad, they will have to do something, that only Mumbai Indians have managed to pull-off in the past. Only MI have managed to win IPL after losing qualifier 1. MI did the same in 2013 and 2017.

22:50(IST)

Faf Du Plessis has carried his bat and also carried CSK into the final. His 42-ball 67 will be regarded as one of the best innings ever (in context) in the history of the IPL if CSK goes on to win the title. Credit to CSK bowlers as well who managed to stop SRH to 139 in 20 overs.

22:48(IST)

Cricketnext’s IPL expert Aakash Chopra: 'IPL - a tournament where seven teams play to meet Chennai Super Kings in the finals.'

22:43(IST)

SIX and Match Ends: Faf Du Plessis hits a flat six down the ground on the first ball of the last over as Chennai Super Kings win the match by 2 wickets with five balls to spare. Chennai have sealed a place in the final of the tournament and the hero of the night was Faf Du Plessis who stood up to be counted when it mattered the most.

22:41(IST)

Four: Shardul Thakaur turns the match on its head as he hits a boundary down the ground off the last ball off Kaul and with that CSK now need 6 runs off the final over. Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be bowling the last over. One would say that CSK are ahead in the match now despite Hyderabad needing just two wickets.

22:40(IST)

Excellent running between the wickets from Faf Du Plessis as he was running towards the danger end after Shardul hit the ball towards long off. The South African made his ground easily as Chennai now need 10 off 7. A real cliff hanger this between the two teams.

22:38(IST)

Four Four: Back to back lucky boundaries for Shardul Thakur and Chennai have surged ahead in the match once again. First, the ball took an edge and went for a boundary towards the right of the keeper and the next went for a boundary towards the left of the keeper. Pressure back on Siddarth Kaul.

22:35(IST)

Four: Faf Du Plessis hits a boundary on the last ball of the over and with that CSK now need 23 runs from last two overs while as for Hyderabad, they need two wickets to win the match and seal a place in the final.

22:33(IST)

OUT: Excellent fielding from Rashid Khan to stop a sure shot boundary at extra cover and then he affects a brilliant run out of Harbhajan Singh as well in the same play. CSK have now lost 8 wickets as Shardul comes out to bat.

22:32(IST)

Four and SIX and Fifty: Bhajji took a single on the first ball and that brought Faf on strike. And the first ball that he faces in the over, Faf hits the ball over the cover fielder for a boundary. Then he clobbers the ball over the mid wicket region for a huge six and completes his half century. Then he hits another boundary to pile on the misery on Brathwaite.

22:26(IST)

Harbhajan Singh failed to connect with the ball in his first seven deliveries and CSK's chances of overhauling the SRH total is decreasing with every dot ball. Kaul gives away just four runs in the over and Bhajji takes a single on the last ball to get back on strike. CSK now need 43 off 18.

22:22(IST)

Rashid Khan's astonishing four overs come to an end as he finishes with figures of 2/11. He scalped the prized wickets of Dhoni and Bravo to set up a thriller of a contest. The onus is now on the other bowlers to do the damage in the last four overs. Kaul returns to bowl the 17th over.

22:19(IST)

DRS saves FAF: Rashid Khan thought he scalped his third wicket of the day when a wrong one hit the pads of Du Plessis and the umpire raised his fingers. But DRS showed that the ball was missing down the leg side and Faf survives. CSK get a massive chance to go at the total.

22:16(IST)

OUT: Brathwaite takes a stunning low catch at the long on ropes as Chahar has to depart for 10. An eventful Sandeep over comes to an end as he gives away 12 runs but picks up the wicket of Chahar on the last ball. CSK now need 48 off 30 deliveries with 3 wickets left.

22:13(IST)

Four: Faf Du Plessis hit the ball over the cover fielder and gets a boundary on the off side off the bowling off Sandeep. The match is once again alive and kicking as CSK batsmen are issuing a stunning fightback.

22:12(IST)

SIX: Following a short break, Deepak Chahar makes his intentions clear as he pulls the ball for a flat six towards mid wicket. The bowler Sandeep Sharma is looking bewildered as to how he managed to hit that shot. Welcome maximum for CSK.

22:07(IST)

Four and SIX: Faf Du Plessis has woken up finally as he hits a four and six off the bowling off Shakib Al Hasan. First, the right hander hits the ball towards deep mid wicket, where a fielding lapse gives him a boundary. And on the next delivery, he goes straight and gets a huge six over long on. CSK now need 60 off 36.

22:04(IST)

CSK's required rate has gone over 10 and Faf Du Plessis is the only recognized batsman left for the men in yellow. But the South African skipper has struggled to make an impact thus far and he has scored just 21 off 24 deliveries. CSK need Deepak Chahar to stay in the middle and build a partnership with Faf now.

22:00(IST)

OUT: Chennai batsmen are falling like nine pins and Ravindra Jadeja is the latest to head back into the hut and he becomes Sandeep Sharma's first wicket of the day. Jadeja hit the ball right at Sandeep who took a good reflex catch in his follow-through. CSK has lost their sixth wicket now and are staring down the barrel in this match. Jadeja departs for 3.

21:58(IST)

Rashid Khan has now bowled 3 overs and he has given 10 runs and taken the prized wickets of Dhoni and Bravo. This is the kind of performance that wins you a game and Rashid has put SRH in firm control of the match.

21:55(IST)

OUT: Williamson's decision to bowl Rashid his third over as worked wonders has he removes Bravo and CSK have now lost half their side. The ball takes a thick edge off the ball and Dhawan takes an easy catch at first slip. Bravo departs for 7 as CSK are struggling at 57/5 in 11.2 overs.

21:52(IST)

Boundaries have dried up a bit in the last few overs as Shakin Al Hasan too keeps it tight and gives away just 6 runs from his first over. With every passing over, the required rate is going up and the pressure seems to piling on the batsmen. With not many regular batsmen to come, Faf and Bravo are refraining from taking unnecessary risks.

21:48(IST)

50: Another excellent over from Rashid Khan comes to an end as he concedes just two singles from it. With that, CSK have also reached 50 in 10 overs. They need 90 more off 60 deliveries to seal place in the final while SRH need 6 wickets.

21:44(IST)

CSK need 92 off 66 deliveries and two of the most hard-hitting batsmen in the world - Du Plessis and Bravo are in the middle at the moment. Jadeja and Harbhajan to come next and SRH know that if they get a couple here, CSK's lower order will be exposed. The target of 140 is looking very daunting now following the fall of wickets.

21:41(IST)

SIX: Faf Du Plessis hit the first six of the innings as he has had enough with defending the ball as wickets are falling at  a regular interval on the other end. He pulls the ball and gets a maximum over the square leg fielder. 8 runs came from that over as CSK reach 48/4 in 9. This match is expected to go right down to the wire now.

21:36(IST)

OUT: This is the wicket that SRH hoped for as Rashid Khan destroys the timber and MS Dhoni has to walk back into the hut for 9. Dhoni failed to read the wrong one and Rashid has his first wicket of the day. CSK have lost their fourth wicket now and are in a spot of botther as Thala departs!

21:33(IST)

Another excellent over comes to an end as far as SRH are concerned. Carlos Brathwaite concedes just four runs to keep the run rate low. Dhoni and Faf are sticking to just taking singles and doubles and playing risk-free cricket. CSK: 37/3 in 7 overs.

21:28(IST)

Four: MS Dhoni hits a boundary to set the ball rolling off Siddarth Kaul. MSD rolls his wrists and gets a boundary towards backward square leg. After 6 overs, CSK score 33/3 and they need 107 off 84 deliveries. This match is going to be thriller!

21:23(IST)

Dhoni plays sensibly and negates Bhuvneshwar Kumar's third over. The pacer tried to get Dhoni to drive or cut but he refrained from doing it. Five dot balls Dhoni played from Bhuvi's over, who conceded just a single on the first. After 5 overs, CSK are 25/3.

A slight net run-rate difference separated the two teams which finished the league stage on 18 points. The riveting contest at the Wankhede Stadium will spell out who goes directly to the May 27 final, also scheduled at this venue, with the winner guaranteed a spot in the summit clash and the loser left to play Qualifier 2 in Kolkata on May 25. The live telecast of the IPL 2018 match between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad will start at 7 PM on May 22nd (Tuesday). The match can be seen live on the Star Sports network and live streaming will be available on hotstar.com. You can also follow the match live blog for ball-by-ball updates, full score and IPL match highlight on cricketnext.com. The raucous Mumbai fans, thus, could expect a rip-roaring contest. Super Kings seem to hold a slight edge going into the match as they have not only got the better of their southern rivals twice in the league stage of the competition but also have the winning momentum going into the match on what promises to be a bouncy track. While Super Kings stopped the aspirations of Kings XI Punjab by overcoming a difficult start last night in their adopted home base of Pune, Sunrisers have been on a three-game losing run, having sealed their play-off spot with a victory on May 10 against Delhi Daredevils. They had somehow not been able to muster up the intensity shown in the better of their league stage campaign and to some extent their highly-rated bowling attack also looked off-coloured in the previous three games.

It was the Super Kings who halted Sunrisers' six-game winning streak with a comprehensive eight-wicket drubbing on May 13 in Pune. Sunrisers have depended totally on their captain Kane Williamson, who has been in terrific form to rise to the number two slot in the leading run-getters' list with 661 runs at just over 60 per game. Only he and Shikhar Dhawan (437 runs), who took some time to get going, have shown consistency with the bat in contrast to their bowling attack which, barring the last few games, has been the talking point of the season. Sunrisers will need their middle order, especially Manish Pandey, to take up more responsibility to counter the Super Kings' thrust. In bowling they have depended mostly on seamers Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Sidharth Kaul and Sandeep Sharma as well as on overseas spinners Rashid Khan and Shakib Al Hasan. The bowling attack needs to come up with an effective plan to stifle Ambati Rayudu at the top of the order who took the game away with a scintillating hundred when the two teams last met. Rayudu made 79 not out in their first leg contest too. The plus point for Super Kings, who have alternately blown hot and cold in their last six games, is that they have not depended on just a couple of batsmen although Rayudu has been their standout performer with 586 runs.

Shane Watson (438 runs from 13 matches) too has been in top form along with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The form of key batsman Suresh Raina, who anchored the innings splendidly against Kings XI with an unbeaten 61, is another encouraging sign. The outstanding spell of fast bowling by young South African Lungi Ngidi, who grabbed 4 for 10 to take the man of the match award, could not have come at a more opportune time for the Super Kings. With Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar and Dwayne Bravo doing their bit on the pace bowling front, Super Kings will be banking on spin twins Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja to deliver in the middle overs. The match timings have been advanced by one hour for the play-offs.
