Troy

A new software-focused networking group that is launching Wednesday in Troy is being driven by pent-up demand and the need for a champion to lead the local effort.

Susan Lundberg, who owns the Albany tech job recruitment firm Capital Tech Search, said there have been similarly-focused efforts in the past to create local software and creative-tech affinity groups in the past.

That is why she is launching New York Tech Loop on Wednesday at Brown's Revolution Hall in Troy. The event is scheduled to run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with a presentation expected to begin at 6 p.m. that will explain the group's initiatives and goals.

As of Tuesday night, there were 100 people registered, with likely more signing up since then.

Lundberg said there is more of a demand now than ever to launch a new, sustainable group since the region now since there are more than 80 software firms in the region, and most of them do not get any recognition.

That can lead to difficulty with hiring and other roadblocks that the tech and startup communities often face as they work to grow their businesses.

"I have been involved with the software community for years. Because of my breath and depth of knowledge I could see the need," Lundberg, a Shaker High and Syracuse University graduate said. "It's taking longer to hire, companies are competing for the same talent. No one is talking about all the success that are software related going on here."

There are other groups locally that touch on the software community, including the Center for Economic Growth's TechConnex program has a broader IT focus. There is a also a software programming workforce development organization called AlbanyCanCode.

Lundberg said that a group with a similar name and mission to New York Tech Loop was started in Saratoga Springs in 2015, but the organizers were so busy with their software jobs, it became difficult to sustain. Lundberg saw the need to professionalize the effort, something she had experience doing.

"I picked up the torch from them and have been running with it," Lundberg said.
