The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) petitioned Election Commission of India to immediately restrain Prime Minister Narendra Modi from holding a function and public rally at Baghpat on May 27 - a day before polling for byelection to the crucial Kairana Lok Sabha seat.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Eastern Peripheral Expressway, one half of the Ring Road around Delhi on May 27. The project is expected to decongest Delhi and reduce vehicular pollution.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court issued an ultimatum to National Highway Authority of India to inaugurate the Expressway on or before May 31. The court took the step after being informed that the Expressway was ready but could not be opened for traffic as the PM had other commitments.

In a petition submitted to the EC on Tuesday, RLD national spokesperson Anil Dubey said that the PM’s function would certainly influence the bypoll as the venue of the function is close to Kairana constituency.

The RLD leader said that the BJP was propagating the PM’s programme in a big way in Kairana and even inviting people from Kairana to attend this public meeting.

“It is expected that the PM will make several announcements during his speech which will certainly influence the by polls,” Dubey alleged.

The RLD leader hence appealed to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of UP to immediately seek an explanation from the BJP and issue direction to stop the PM’s programme.
