NEW PHILADELPHIA Some 90 high school students observed criminal court proceedings Tuesday at the Tuscarawas County Courthouse for Law Day, meant to help people appreciate their liberties and to affirm their loyalty to the United States, especially with regard to equality and justice. It also aims to cultivate respect for the law.

Students attended from New Philadelphia and Newcomerstown high schools, as well as the STAR Alternative School in New Philadelphia.

They sat through hearings conducted by Tuscarawas County Common Pleas judges Elizabeth Lehigh Thomakos and Edward O'Farrell.

The charges included aggravated vehicular homicide, drunken driving, drug possession, grand theft, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, petty theft, receiving stolen property and failure to comply with the order of a police officer.

Students had the chance to ask questions of the judges and attorneys. Participating were assistant county prosecutors R. Scott Deedrick and Amanda Miller and public defenders Mark Perlaky and Nicole Stephan.
