And Ola makes three: another rideshare service launches in the capital

Canberra, it's time to download yet another rideshare app to your phone.

Just days after the announcement that Australian all-female rideshare service Shebah is now available in Canberra, a third rideshare service is launching in the capital.

Say hola to Ola, one of the world's largest ridesharing companies, founded in India in 2011. The service is being rolled out to capital cities across Australia in 2018 and officially launches in Canberra on Tuesday.

A team of Ola drivers is already sitting by their mobile phones, ready to collect ACT travellers.

While the passenger experience doesn't really differ from other rideshare options, the big winners with Ola are drivers.

Ola's standard commission rate is 15 per cent. Shebah's commission rate is also 15 per cent (but the company only employs female drivers), while Uber's commission rate is 25 per cent.

Ola drivers are paid daily and have access to community town hall events, to learn about innovation within the company and share their concerns and network with other drivers.

Retired Treasury staff member John Burge, who's been an Uber driver for two-and-a-half years, says he's glad Ola "allows for significantly more take-home pay".

"It's a game-changer and will really make a difference in Canberra," Mr Burge says.

"Competition keeps everybody on their toes and I think Ola will play an important part in that."

Mr Burge says he will continue to drive for both rideshare services, dipping in and out of Ola and Uber according to passenger demand.

"As contractors, both companies are very happy for [drivers] to work for the other one as well," he says.

"It's a matter of choice both for us as drivers and for passengers, and it's a big step forward for Canberra to have a large rideshare operator coming in, in addition to Uber."

Ola's head of operations for Australia, Wolf Aaron, says the company's vision is for Ola to be available to every Australian.

"We have 30,000 driver partners across Australia and a big chunk of those have come from Canberra in the past few weeks, which is great," Mr Aaron says.

"We've been advertising through various channels [in the ACT] and word of mouth has been a great source of recruitment, the drivers are really excited about Ola coming to town and they've really picked up on it."

But is there really room for a third rideshare company in Canberra?

"We've done our due diuligance and we've been working on the Australian strategy for a while," Mr Aaron says.

"Canberra, being the nation's capital, is an important part of that strategy."
