Affordable Medicines and Retail Implants for Treatment (AMRIT) pharmacies which provides medicines for cancer, cardiovascular and other diseases at a discounted rate has helped many people in Meghalaya to get medicines at a cheaper rate and now there are demands to set up more AMRIT pharmacies throughout the state.

The first AMRIT outlet opened at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi on November 2015. AMRIT is an initiative of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to provide medicines for cancer, cardiovascular and other diseases at a discounted rate.

Presently, AMRIT pharmacies are functional in Shillong Civil Hospital and even the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Science (NEIGRIHMS).

AMRIT pharmacy will be open in 9 other hospitals in the state. Mr Aafaque Hussain A beneficiary of Scheme has said that the quality of medicines is very good.

It may be mentioned that the State Government last year had signed an agreement to set up more pharmacies in state government hospitals. The agreement was signed between the state government and the HLL Lifecare Limited to set up (AMRIT) pharmacy outlets in the government hospitals.
