SOMERSET – Somerset Berkley Regional had its march to a hoped-for playoff berth delayed on Monday. Greater New Bedford scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to upend the Raiders 2-0 in South Coast Conference softball at Somerset Berkley Regional High School.

Winner of its previous four games, SBR (8-7, 7-5 SCC) stranded seven baserunners, two each in the fourth and seventh innings, in wasting a stellar pitching effort from Abby Cadorette. The righthander tossed a four-hitter.

GNB (16-5, 12-2 SCC) scored in the seventh on one hit, two walks and two wild pitches. The 0-0 tie was broken when, with one and runners at second and third, leadoff batter Alexus Neno grounded back to the circle. Cadorette looked pinch-runner Kadolyn Medeiros back to third base and then spun to throw to first base for the out. Medeiros broke for home on the throw to first and slid home safely just ahead of first baseman Aliyah Welker’s throw.

Sarah Carvalho scored moments later on a wild pitch.

Thanks to Emily Pacheco’s one-out single and Mariah Mahjoory’s two-out single, SBR managed first and second in the home half of the seventh before complete-game winning pitcher Jenna Sylvia, a sophomore, retired leadoff batter Megan Antaya on a pop-up to second base.

Sylvia pitched a five-hitter and issued two walks. She did her best pitching in the fourth after a Cadorette one-out double to right center gave the Raiders second and third. She extinguished the threat on a ground out to third and a strikeout. Lindsay Chubbuck had started the inning with a sharp single to left.

Skyla Berube nearly gave GNB the lead in the fifth inning. Her one-out blast to left-center ricocheted off the top bar of the fence and back toward the infield for a double.

SBR second baseman Julyanne Pacheco came up with two superb defensive plays, both on the backhand. In the second inning, she dove all out for a ground and flipped to second for the inning-ending force out. In the third, she gloved on the short hop a Neno grounder and raced to second for a force out.
