Ujjain: Bus operators in Ujjain division went on a strike on Monday demanding a 40 per cent rise in bus fares owing to sharp hike in prices of fuel, while the Government restricted the rise in fares to just 10 per cent. The strike crippled bus services across Ujjain and neighbouring places, with over 450 buses going off the roads.
Hundreds of commuters were stranded at Dewas gate and Nanakheda bus stands all day. Several of them who commuted on a daily basis, had to resort to other means of transportation. Most of them resorted to private vehicles and trains to reach their destinations.
Passengers traveling to Dhar, Barnagar, Mandu, Badnawar faced problems, since direct trains to these areas are currently unavailable. Speaking to the media bus operators said the 10 percent hike allowed by the government was too little and not enough even to meet their day to day operating expenses. RTO Santosh Malviya said he had not been aware of the strike called by the bus operators, and stated that he would have a discussion with the bus operators soon.
