The results of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) will be declared on Wednesday afternoon, about two weeks before it was expected.

The exams were conducted at 339 centres one month ago, on April 22. Over 1.25 lakh students took the exam for admission to undergraduate courses in engineering and technology, pharmacy and architecture in universities, government-run colleges and self-financed institutes in the state.

“The results will be declared during a press meet at 2pm on Wednesday. We’ll explain during the meet how we managed to declare the results much earlier than scheduled,” Malayendu Saha, chairman of WBJEE Board, said on Tuesday.

The board has already released the official answer keys on its website for examinees to find out how they fared.

The exam had two papers, with the first on mathematics and the second combined physics and chemistry. Those who opted for B.Pharm courses had to take test only on the second paper.

A record number of examinees were from outside Bengal, with about 40% of them from other states, majority being from the neighbouring states of Bihar and Jharkhand.

The total number of examinees, too, was about 8,000 more than previous year, which had earlier prompted the WBJEEB authorities to hope that students’ interest in engineering courses were again on the rise after a phase of decline.

Incidentally, a significant number of seats remained vacant in the state’s private engineering colleges over the past few years. In the 2016-17 academic session, as many as 42% of the state’s total 37,593 seats for engineering and technology remained vacant.

During the 2017-18 academic sessions, more than two dozen of private engineering colleges in the state had more than 70% of seats vacant.

Note: The result in the form of downloadable rank Card of WBJEE-2018 will be available at at around 4pm. In addition, candidates may view their rank from board’s website wbjeeb.nic.in from 4pm onwards.
