Sixty eight and counting.
That’s how many Highland Conference softball games the Beal City varsity program has now won in a row, 68.
On Tuesday afternoon the Aggies put the final touches on a sixth-straight Highland Conference regular-season crown as they swept Evart at home by scores of 15-0 (3 innings) and 16-1 (5 innings) to close out the conference schedule and win the title outright.
With the wins the seventh-ranked Aggies improve to 20-1 overall all while closing the conference season out at 12-0. They also bumped their winning streak to 18 games and counting via the sweep.
“It’s working out well and we’re playing well,” said head coach John Davis, who has never lost a conference contest in his four years with the Aggies. “The girls have kept their focus all season and have put in a lot of extra time.
The winning streak began in May of 2013 with a sweep of Lake City and has continued for the past six years running.
In the opener Elizabeth Powell got the win as she didn’t allow a run. She also had three hits to pace the offense.
Sidney Upton got the win in game two for the hosts. Offensively, Powell had two hits while Kennedy Fike and Jordan Fillenworth both doubled and singled. Upton also had a good game at the plate as she tallied two hits.
Next up for the Aggies is a doubleheader at Morley-Stanwood Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Aggies also play at the Coleman tournament in Saturday.
For Davis the next four days are key as he wants to get his team ready for the postseason which starts next week.
“We’re hitting the ball well right now and our pitchers are pitching the lights out, but we need to face better pitching to get ready,” he added.
