Grant Robertson says he is in favour of a downtown stadium in Auckland.
Finance Minister Grant Robertson says most large cities are going for downtown stadiums, and Auckland should be no different – but money remains the major hurdle.
The Auckland waterfront stadium debate resurfaced this week after Mayor Phil Goff was criticised for his handling of a $1 million pre-feasibility report from PwC which looked into the pros and cons of building one.
Robertson said there was a need for improved stadium infrastructure in Auckland, but he simply didn't have the revenue at his disposal.
"I think Auckland has a need to improve the facilities that we have for sport and recreation. I know the Auckland Council is working on an integrated plan," he said.
"I haven't talked to much to Mayor Phil Goff about that as I have higher priorities in terms of spending at the moment but we are continuing to talk about what is possible."
It is estimated the new stadium could cost up to $1.5 billion.
The report found a new stadium, which would have a retractable roof and could seat up to 55,000 spectators, could cost up to $1.5 billion.
Government funding was an option should the build get the green light, but other options should be explored, Robertson said.
"There would be many ways to finance it, potentially, but what I have said to Goff was I am happy to sit at the table and talk about it."
The report outlined improvements to Eden Park as an alternative – which would cost about $700 million less.
However, Robertson said Eden Park had its challenges long term.
"Eden Park is in a residential area which limits the number of games that can be played there. Most large cities nowadays go for the downtown stadium option," he said.
"I think most Aucklanders and most New Zealanders would like to see a stadium [at the waterfront] but obviously we have to get the costings and as I say, right now I simply don't have the revenue."
Goff is currently being investigated by the Ombudsman's office for his handling of the stadium report.
