Why Arsenal chose Unai Emery

Arsenal have reportedly picked Unai Emery to replace Arsene Wenger after the Gunners board were impressed by one big managerial achievement.

Emery is set to take over at the Emirates after two mixed years at PSG where he won one Ligue 1 title and four domestic cups.

Arsenal’s decision has been criticised by many with club legend Ian Wright stunned at the way Arteta has been treated, and the BBC have now opened up on the Gunners’ choice.

Emery, despite failing to meet PSG’s expectations of him, remains well-respected throughout the footballing world.

The 46-year-old has won three Europa League titles throughout his career, all coming with Sevilla.

The last of those was in 2016 when the La Liga giants beat Liverpool 3-1 to take the prize, and his European pedigree, the BBC say, has convinced Arsenal he is the right man.

Transfer News: Arsenal have been linked with Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly

Kalidou Koulibaly latest

Kalidou Koulibaly’s agent has sent mixed messages to potential suitors.

Premier League duo Chelsea and Arsenal have frequently been linked with a move for Napoli’s towering centre-back.

And Express Sport exclusively revealed last week that .

claim they’ve both lodged fresh enquiries for the Senegal international, who will represent his country at the World Cup next month.

But despite the reported interest, Koulibaly's agent Bruno Satin has refused to clarify the situation.

"It is obvious that he is interested in the big clubs, like all the important players of Napoli, he has a contract with the club, he cannot run away,” Satin said.

"Now he has closed the season, unfortunately he has had the disappointment not to win the championship, but he is lucky to have the chance to go to the World Cup, he is about to leave with Senegal and it is another goal of his season.

"If he is happy at Napoli? Absolutely yes."

Neville slams appointment process

Unai Emery is a good appointment for Arsenal but their process of finding Arsene Wenger's replacement was a mess, claims Gary Neville.

The Spaniard has been named as the next Gunners boss, despite Mikel Arteta seemingly having the job wrapped up over the weekend.

The Manchester City No 2 was interviewed for the Arsenal role before the club performed a huge U-turn and opted for former PSG boss Emery on Monday evening.

And while Neville feels Emery is a good coach, the former Manchester United star admitted Arsenal's process of appointing a new manager was a 'mess'.

"They’ve bounced all over the place on it!" he tweeted. "However he’s a good appointment for Arsenal. The process a mess. Anyway the end result is a very good coach."
