MALTA – The Malta Lions Club is shooting to have new playground equipment installed at Lions Park on Fourth Street before this year's Malta Days celebration begins June 8.
Tom Weber, secretary for Malta Lions Club, said the old playground equipment at the park had to be removed due to some insurance concerns.
"There were some of the old types of slides and old types of swings," Weber said. "I guess the insurance company didn't like that style."
Weber said the Lions Club is providing most of the labor for the project. The next work session will be 5 p.m. Wednesday, since the originally-scheduled Monday work day was rained out, he said.
Weber said the project began last summer with the removal of old equipment, some of which was vandalized, including someone burning an old chain bridge.
Weber said funds for the new playground given in the past year or so came from club fundraisers, a church Taco Sunday fundraiser and the Village of Malta. He said the village provided the most funds to the project.
"It was like a team effort," Weber said.
