Delhi knock Mumbai out of IPL

Delhi Daredevils broke Mumbai Indians' hearts at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium on Sunday as Amit Mishra, Harhsal Patel and Sandeep Lamichhane combined to restrict the visitors' 175-run chase at 163 all out to hand Delhi an 11-wicket win. As a result of it, Mumbai are now out of the play-off race.

Delhi Daredevils won the toss and opted to bat first. The sides announced their team sheets with one change each, with Delhi bringing in Liam Plunkett for Avesh Khan and the visitors fielding Mustafizur Rahman for Mitchell McClenaghan, who had picked up a shoulder problem.

Delhi's miserable opening partnership of late once again continued. In the very fourth over Prithvi Shaw (12 runs off 8 balls) was dismissed through a dubious run-out. The young opener appeared to be taking a Sunday afternoon stroll at the Kotla at about four-five yards outside the crease when disaster struck. With Maxwell defending on the other end, Shaw seemed too indolent to even make an attempt to get within the safety zone as Hardik Pandya's direct throw caught the wicket as well as Shaw with surprise.

Maxwell (22 runs off 18 balls) followed his fellow-opener back to the pavilion shortly in the fifth over as Bumrah jolted the leg stump off a skilful delivery.

With Shaw and Maxwell nullified early, DD made way for their skipper Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant to join the fray as the hosts stood at 46/2 at the end of the powerplay.

Iyer (6 off 10)did not quite make his presence felt and was shown the exit in the ninth over as he connected poorly with a Mayank Markande googly to launch the ball straight down the deep midwicket and into the hands of Krunal Pandya, who remained aware of the ropes a mere couple of inches behind him to collect the catch.

However, Pant's presence on the field was eventually getting stronger — and bothersome for the Mumbai bowlers.

The Delhi-youngster hit the 50-run mark (off 34 deliveries) in the fifteenth over, punctuated with four fours and two sixes — one of those a single-handed sweep off a Hardik Pandya delivery.

Pant's advance was however cut short in the seventeenth over as he attempted a lofted shot off a Krunal Pandya delivery, which — devoid of the required elevation — sailed right into the hands of Kieron Pollard. With that, Pant's innings came to an end at 64 runs off 44 balls with the team’s  total at 139/4.

Pant's was to be the last Daredevils wicket to be dismissed as Vijay Shankar's contribution of 43 runs from 30 deliveries and Abhishek Sharma's 15 off 10 balls took the score to 174 runs for the home side as Delhi’s  innings came to an end.

Mumbai's 175-run target chase began with opener Suryakumar Yadav greeting Delhi's Nepali spinner Sandeep Lamichhane with a six and a four, but only to walk back (at 12 off 4 balls ) after miscuing a googly towards Vijay Shankar, who had to cover a lot of ground to collect the catch at long-on.

Despite the early dismissal, Evin Lewis remained unperturbed for the sake of his team as he took Mumbai to 57 runs by the end of the powerplay.

The seventh over began with the dismissal of first down Ishan Kishan (5 off 13) after the left-hander gifted an easy catch to Shankar, once again at long-on, from Amit Mishra's bowling.

Delhi's fielding unit slipped a couple of times to gift twofold life to Kieron Pollard as first, Prithvi Shaw and then Liam Plunkett dropped a catch each to allow Pollard to prolong his stay on the pitch.

Meanwhile, Lewis approached his half-century, but failed to reach that mark as Mishra struck for the second time in the evening to restrict the West Indies international to 48 runs (off 31 balls).

Following Lewis' departure, Mumbai's middle order appeared to have entered into a state of collapse.

In the tenth over, Lamichhane stunned the visitors by nullifying both Pollard (7 off 7) and Krunal Pandya (4 off 3) in the space of four balls. The former's dismissal in particular was executed in spectacular fashion as Daredevils' Maxwell took a reverse-cupped catch as he approached the boundary ropes only to throw the ball towards Boult (running from long-off) just as he was about to cross the boundary.

Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma (13 off 11) was dismissed by Harshal Patel after Boult took another catch in similar manner — Maxwell throwing the ball before crossing the boundary and Boult collecting it.

Ben Cutting (37 off 20) appeared to provide stability to Mumbai's chase with some help from Hardik Pandya (27 off 17), but in the fifteenth over, the latter fell off an Amit Mishra delivery as substitute Rahul Tewatia collected a lofted shot to send the all-rounder back to the pavilion.

Harshal Patel then checked Cutting's advance in the final over as Patel's delivery led the way for Maxwell to collect a catch. Mayank Markande and Jasprit Bumrah sank without trace as Delhi Daredevils won the match by 11 runs, pulling the curtain over Mumbai Indians' shaky run in the Indian Premier League.  The visitors had just been done and dusted at 163 all out.
