SYCAMORE – Thanks to an off-duty firefighter and a garden hose, damage was limited at a garage fire Saturday afternoon on East Lincoln Street.
According to a news release from the Sycamore Fire Department, a Sycamore fire lieutenant was biking past 122 E. Lincoln St. about 1:15 p.m. when he noticed heavy fire and smoke coming from an unattached garage.
He made sure no one was home and then used a garden hose to keep the flames at bay until crews arrived.
The fire was brought under control, but not before it caused about $15,000 in damage to the garage and its contents. While the fire still is under investigation, it appeared to have started in the area of the garage, according to the release.
The DeKalb, Burlington and Elburn fire departments, as well as Sycamore public works and police, assisted.
