Indore: Junior doctors of Maharaja Yashwantrao hospital continue strike, services likely to hit today

Indore: Medical services at Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital (MYH) were hit on Sunday as the junior doctors continued their strike on second day against the incident of assault on a junior doctor by the family members of a pregnant woman on Friday evening.

Junior Doctors’ Association (JDA) had also met the Dean of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Dr Sharad Thora on Sunday and submitted a memorandum to press their demands. The association refused to call off the strike on the verbal assurance given by the Dean. They demanded written assurance from Dr Thora.

“Apart from tightening security at the hospital, we demanded the hospital administration to intervene into the matter and lodge a complaint against the accused on their behalf,” president of Junior Doctors’ Association, Dr Kripa Shankar Tiwari said.

He said that every time after such incidents, junior doctors have to lodge complain; but as the incident took place in the hospital and that too with a doctor on duty. “We want the hospital administration to take action and lodge a complaint this time. We also demanded action against the security guards of the hospital who failed in controlling entry of goons,” he said.

Dr Thora had given them assurance to take appropriate action in the matter and to endorse the compliant of the junior doctors with the police. “The Dean has given us verbal assurance but we are not satisfied with it as he did the same after the previous incident but nothing had happened,” Dr Tiwari said.

Meanwhile, Superintendent of MY Hospital Dr VS Pal said that they have made alternate arrangements and asked the nursing staff and senior doctors to handle the situation. According to hospital insiders, the services were not affected much on Sunday due to low footfall of patients but it will affect the service on Monday as the number of patients in OPD and IPD will be high being the first day of the week. Junior doctors had struck work on Saturday noon to protest against the assault of Dr Abhishek Shrivastava by the kin of a pregnant woman in gynaecology department on Friday night over being stopped to enter in gynaecology ward.
