The death toll in the Nipah virus outbreak in north Kerala has touched 11, spreading panic across the state. The latest death is that of a nurse who treated patients of the outbreak at Perambra Taluk Hospital. Perambra, about 40 km from Kozhikode city, is the epicentre of the outbreak. Several deaths have been reported in nearby Malappuram district too.

The National Institute of Virology in Pune had attributed three deaths in Changaroth village of Perambra to the virus. All three were members of the same family. So far, 11 deaths have taken place while 10 others are undergoing treatment at various hospitals across Kozhikode.

    What is Nipah Virus?

    Nipah Virus is an emerging infectious disease that broke out in Malaysia and Singapore in 1998 and 1999. It first appeared in domestic pigs and has been found among several species of domestic animals including dogs, cats, goats, horses and sheep. The infection is also known to affect human beings. The organism which causes Nipah Virus encephalitis is an RNA or Ribonucleic acid virus of the family Paramyxoviridae, genus Henipavirus, and is closely related to Hendra virus.
