UPDATE: Pest control is treating the downtown branch of the Lynchburg Public Library now. It will reopen at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow morning after today's temporary closure.
EARLIER: The downtown branch of the Lynchburg Public Library was closed temporarily Monday morning after staff found a bedbug.
Lynchburg Public Library Director Marilyn Martin said a staff member found a single, live bedbug in a sticky trap set out for such purposes. A pest control investigation is underway, examining the entire library to determine the extent of the bedbugs.
Martin said Monday she would not know how long the library would be closed until the pest control investigation finished.
Martin said the branch, which is at 900 Church St., might reopen Tuesday if the pest control investigation does not identify a scattered infestation. She asked for the public’s cooperation during the closure.
“Please be patient and understand that public places are all having the same issues,” she said about the bedbug discovery.
All library services at the library’s main branch at the Plaza shopping center are continuing as normal. Martin advised anyone with questions to call the Lynchburg Public Library at (434) 455-6330.
The downtown branch was treated in December after bedbugs and book lice were traced to a single book. It was treated again in February after the discovery of bedbugs in the meeting room during an AARP tax preparation session.
