Woman held for trying to sell friend’s baby, hunt on for 2 more

A 28-year-old woman was arrested on charges of trying to sell her friend’s three-month-old baby boy in Madhavaram on Saturday.

According to the police, Anbarasi, a physically challenged woman, is a resident of Mathur, near Madhavaram. A week ago, her friend Swetha from Sathuvacheri, near Vellore, came to stay in her house after a quarrel with her husband.

Swetha had brought her 3-year-old daughter and 3-month-old son along with her. She started working in Mathur to support her children.

Sale offer

Anbarasi tried to lure Ms. Swetha into selling her son for a hefty amount, but she refused. When Ms. Swetha returned from work on Saturday afternoon, she found her son and Anbarasi missing. Neighbours told her that Anbarasi, her house owner Vadivukarasi, 52, and her sister Babitha were seen carrying the baby. Ms. Swetha lodged a complaint with the Madhavaram Milk Colony police station.

“Somehow, the three came to know that a police complaint was lodged and they left the baby back in Anbarasi’s house and fled,” a police officer said.

The police arrested Anbarasi and are searching for the other two women.
