THANE: Hundreds of resident doctors from the BMC-run Sion Hospital went on a day-long strike, on Monday, to express their solidarity with the two doctors from JJ Hospital who were allegedly beaten up by a deceased patient’s relatives on Saturday.

As part of this one-day-strike, close to 450 doctors stayed away from the OPD, but continued to perform their duties in the other departments of the hospital.

The OPD, meanwhile, was taken over by the senior faculty and head of departments of the hospital to ensure that the critical patients were not affected because of the strike.

“There was some miscommunication in the first part of the day because of the strike. However, our 150 plus senior faculty members immediately took over the OPD and dealt with the critical cases. We had 1909 OPD patients, 176 causalities, 63 admissions and seven deliveries. The non-emergency appointments which could be rescheduled were given latter dates to help up get a better grip on the situation,” said Sion Hospital’s Dean Dr. Jayashree Mondkar.

Members of the MARD asserted that the strike at Sion Hospital was mainly to show support for the resident doctors at JJ Hospital, and not for any specific demands for their hospital.

Dr. Harshalkumar Mahajan, general secretary Sion MARD, said, “As opposed to the substancial facilities at Sion hospital, the JJ hospital which is thrice its size has barely any, which was the one of the factors that allowed the patients relatives to assault the doctors on Saturday. The motive of the day-long strike at Sion hospital was to show our solidarity to those doctors, and we ensured that our critical patients did not leave the hospital without the necessary medical attention."
