Punjab: VB sleuths raid RTA secy office for 'tax evasion'

SANGRUR: A team led by an SP rank officer raided the office of secretary, regional transport authority (RTA) to scrutinise and confiscate documents pertaining to the last ten years. The vigilance bureau (VB) team stated that they had received a complaint regarding evasion of taxes at the RTA office which needed to be investigated.
According to the sources, the top functionaries of the vigilance department had received a complaint alleging that the district transport authorities had committed several financial irregularities over the last ten years. These sources said the transport authorities not only failed to deposit entire taxes collected by way of registration and transfer of vehicles, but had also made some fake entries in the official records to cover up the irregularities.

VB SP Prithpal Singh, under whom the team had carried out the raid, said they had received a complaint regarding irregularities which had been investigated. He said that VB team had gone through the records of the transport department and also confiscated certain documents that needed further scrutiny.

SSP JS Sidhu said the raid had been ordered by the senior officials of the department and VB sleuths visited the office of RTA to carry out detailed investigations. He, however, refused to divulge further details.
