Toronto firefighters spent hours Monday morning battling a two-alarm fire at Sunnybrook Stables that broke out early Monday morning.

A barn caught fire just before 3 a.m. and became engulfed in flames before a second nearby barn also caught fire.

Toronto Fire has confirmed that there were horses in the first barn, but can't say how many were injured or killed.

When firefighters arrived they were able to move about 15 horses from one of the second burning barn to another barn for safekeeping.

"The crews did an excellent job getting the horses out of the second [barn]," said Toronto Fire Platoon Chief Doug Wishart.

He confirmed that the owners of the stables are aware of what happened and in touch with Toronto Fire.

In all, 40 to 50 firefighters were at the scene, with the fire deemed under control by about 6 a.m.

Horses headed to CNE

The Toronto Police mounted unit was also on the scene to help transport surviving horses to the CNE grounds.

Images from the scene in the aftermath of the blaze show surviving horses being led into trailers by officers.

The stables are located in Sunnybrook Park, just north of Leaside. Sunnybrook Stables offers summer camps and riding lessons.
