The all-women crew of the Indian Navy on board naval vessel INSV Tarini is all set to return to Goa on Monday after the successful completion of the circumnavigation of the globe for eight months. Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman along with Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sunil Lanba will receive the naval officers on their arrival near Panaji.

Earlier on May 18, the Defence Ministry in a tweet congratulated the crew for their remarkable feat.

INSV Tarini set out for sail on September 10, 2017, from Goa.  It is the first Indian all-women crew to circumnavigate the globe. The expedition named 'Navika Sagar Parikrama' is led by Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi. The crew also included Lt-Commanders Pratibha Jamwal and Swati P, and Lieutenants Aishwarya Boddapati, S Vijaya Devi and Payal Gupta. The six women officers were trained under Captain Dilip Donde, the first Indian to solo-circumnavigate the globe in 2009-2010.

During the eight months and 11 days of the expedition, they sailed in six legs, with stop-overs at five ports, namely Fremantle (Australia), Lyttelton (New Zealand), Port Stanley (Falklands), Cape Town (South Africa) and Mauritius. INSV Tarini sailed over 21,600 nautical miles, visited five countries, sailed across four continents, three oceans, passed south of three capes and crossed the Equator twice.

The expedition was aimed at promoting women empowerment, in line with the government's thrust for ‘Nari Shakti’. It also intended to promote ocean sailing by the Indian Navy and inspire youth to develop a spirit of adventure.

The all-women crew is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi on May 23, where it will be felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
