PHYLLIS INA BOCK
Iowa City
Phyllis Ina Bock, 88, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 18, 2018, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence, where she had lived for the past three years.
Phyllis was born Aug. 19, 1929, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Lee and Maude (Paintin) Mathes. She lived her entire life in Iowa City and had many friends and relatives in the area whom she dearly loved. Phyllis married the love of her life, William (Bill Sr.) Bock on May 16, 1947, in Iowa City. Together they raised four children, Bill Jr., Gary, Tim and a few years later, Stephanie. Phyllis devoted her entire life to her family and in helping others.
She worked at the University Hospital, the Presbyterian Church, and finally devoted 15 years of service to the people of Oaknoll Residence. At Oaknoll, she worked in the kitchen and was devoted to making the residents happy. She truly cared about the people she served and made sure their dining experience was special. After retiring from the kitchen, she continued "serving" Oaknoll residents as a companion. Devoting her life to helping others was her greatest gift.
Phyllis devoted herself to her family. She enjoyed cooking large meals and hosting everyone. In her free time, she enjoyed lunches with friends, movies and music. In her younger years, she enjoyed attending University of Iowa women's basketball games, bowling and dancing on Saturday nights. She was a devout Catholic who attended Mass each Sunday.
Phyllis is survived by her loving children, Bill Bock Jr., Gary (Jacki) Bock, Timothy Bock (Kandy Cummins), all of Iowa City, and Stephanie (Craig) Newlun of The Woodlands, Texas; her sister, Carmen Pearson of Birmingham, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Brent, Jamie, Adam (Jennifer), Matthew, Maggie (Michael), Logan, Garrett and Abbey; three great-grandchildren, Presley, Violet and Maverick; and many dearly loved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Sr.; both parents; her brother, Jack Mathes; her older sister, Margarete Spenler; and infant grandson, Peyton Newlun.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 24, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City with Father Steve Witt officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City.
