The Lake Braddock baseball team is hoping the dog pile they formed on Saturday night is the first of a few this postseason. With a 4-1 win over West Springfield, the Bruins won the Patriot District tournament. They have yet to lose a game to a local Virginia opponent this season, with their three losses coming against Maryland powerhouse Riverdale Baptist and two teams at a tournament in Florida.

Their last loss, to Riverdale, came on April 14. Even in that game, the Bruins’ offense showed up, scoring eight runs and giving the team a lead they couldn’t hold on to.

In the Patriot District semis, when the stakes were much higher, the offense showed up again, bringing the team back from a 5-0 deficit to win, 6-5.

“We know what our offense is capable of, so there’s never any panic,” Lake Braddock Coach Jody Rutherford said.

In Maryland, the 4A bracket is down to the state semifinals. C.H. Flowers, champions of the South region, will face Severna Park, winners of the East, while Howard and B-CC will play on the other side, representing the North and West, respectively.

Both Howard and Severna Park made it to last year’s semifinals, with the Lions topping the Falcons for a spot in the championship. B-CC is in the semifinals for the first time since 1989, and the Jaguars are in the final four for the first time in team history.

“I knew we had the talent in this program, in this team, but what you’re seeing now is the top end of a long process for guys that were freshman starters, four-year starters and stuck with the program,” Jaguars Coach George Brown said.
