Weather Alert: Heavy rainfall of about 150mm expected in Sabaragamuwa province

COLOMBO (News 1st) – The Meteorology Department predicts heavy rainfalls of about 150 mm can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa province.

The prevailing rainy condition in the South-west part of the island is expected to enhance today (May 20).

Furthermore, they state that the Southwest monsoon conditions are getting established over the island.

It added that showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces and will occur elsewhere particularly after 2.00 PM.

Heavy falls, above 100 mm can be expected at some places, particularly in Western Central and Uva province and in Galle and Matara districts.

Windy conditions in the sea areas around the island and showery condition in the sea area to the South-west of the island are expected to enhance.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. Heavy showers can be expected at some places in the above sea area.

According to the Met Department, Winds will be Westerly to South-westerly in the direction of the sea areas around the island and speed will be 30-40 kmph.

Meanwhile, four spill gates of the Deduru Oya and another spill gate of the Udawalawe reservoir continue to remain open owing to incessant rains. The DMC requests the general public to remain vigilant as water levels of rivers could rise.
