‘Orange alert’ in Guj as temp crosses 44

With mercury crossed 44 degree Celsius in Gujarat’s biggest city Ahmedabad the authorities issued orange alert for the district on Friday.

In other parts of the State, mercury hovered in the range of 42 to as high as 45 degree Celsius! Temperature in port town Kandla in Kutch district crossed 45 degree Celsius. 

As per the forecast of India Meteorological Department (IMD) maximum temperature likely to remain 41°C TO 45°C   over North Gujarat region, parts of South Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch region during the upcoming week-end. IMD further stated that heat wave conditions very likely to prevail in these regions during the period.

Forth last three days Kandla port remained hottest in the state with mercury continuously touching 45°C there. Sources in the state health department said that as many as 124 cases of abdominal pain, around 100 cases of unconsciousness, 41 of fainting and 50 cases of vomiting registered in the state on Thursday. Over 500 heat related registered on the day with Ahmedabad alone registered over 120 on the day.

In wake of unprecedented heat, Ahmedabad District Bar Association has decided to remain away from work from 18th to 23rd May. Rajesh Kumar president of the Bar Association said that three advocates became victims of heat wave. Even clients, litigants and others coming to courts are facing lots of heat related problems and hence it was decided to keep one week’s holiday. An eight year old girl reportedly died due to excessive heat in Surendranagar district where mercury touched 43 degree Celsius.
