David Lewis Schirm was born May 6, 1926, in rural Newhall to Lewis and Agnes (Hegawald) Schirm. He graduated from Garrison High School and served his country in the United States Army nearing the end of World War II. On Dec. 4, 1951, he was united in marriage to Janice Hupfeld at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Van Horne.
He farmed in the Garrison area, retiring in 1993. David and Janice enjoyed many dances together and wintered with friends in Pharr, Texas. He was extremely proud of his military service and was fortunate to travel to Washington, D.C., as part of the Honor Flight program. David was a lifelong member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Garrison, serving as an elder for many years. He also was a member of the Lions Club and a 70-year member of the American Legion. Besides farming, his passion was watching his three sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sporting events. He was especially fond of the game of baseball. He was a very proud member of the Schirm baseball team and an avid Iowa Hawkeyes basketball fan.
David is survived by his wife of 66 years, Janice; daughter, Susan (George) Karam of Ely; sons, Randy (Susan) Schirm of Garrison, Dan (Deb) Schirm of Vinton and Dave Schirm of Dysart; 10 grandchildren, Christian (Stacy) Karam, Matthew (Chenelle) Karam, Payton (Alexa) Schirm, Dustin (Kimberly) Schirm, Lewis Schirm, Jennifer Piper, Randi (Andrew) DeCap, Devon Schirm, Wyatt Schirm and Whitney Schirm; 14 great-grandchildren, David, Mason, Charlie, Eva, Hudson, Kayde, Haleigh, Aleah, Ava, Addie, Auden, Braxton, Madison and Brynlee, and a new great-grandson to be born in August; five stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lois Flickinger; and two brothers, DuWayne and Richard Schirm.
The family would like to thank Pastor Leckband and the staff of the Vinton Lutheran Home for their compassionate care of our parents.
