Indians minor-league roundup for May 19: Clippers walk off on Shaffer’s grand slam

• Richie Shaffer’s grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning broke a tie game and gave Triple-A Columbus a 8-4 walk-off win against Charlotte.

The Clippers (18-21) trailed by a run entering their final at-bat. Brandon Barnes’ RBI single tied the score at 4-4. After Mike Papi singled and Yandy Diaz was intentionally walked, Shaffer sent an offering from Gregory Infante over the fence in right-center field.

The Knights scored two runs in the away ninth to take a one-run lead. Cole Sulser recorded the final two outs of the inning to earn a victory for Columbus.

Charlotte led, 2-1, after six innings before the Clippers scored on Nellie Rodriguez’s home run and Papi’s RBI single to take a late lead.

• Double-A Akron withstood a late rally from Hartford to beat the Yard Goats, 5-4.

Joe Sever’s fourth home run in the fourth inning opened scoring for the RubberDucks (24-18). Tyler Krieger’s RBI single and Andrew Calica’s RBI double extended the lead to 3-0 in the fifth. Connor Marabell’s RBI single in the sixth and Willi Castro’s seventh-inning RBI single gave Akron a 5-0 lead.

Hartford scored its first run in the seventh, added two in the eighth and drew within one in the ninth. Luke Eubank struck out Brian Mundell and induced a groundout to preserve Akron’s victory.

Matt Whitehouse (2-1) pitched five shutout innings to earn the winning decision. Whitehouse struck out three, walked none and yielded five hits. Yard Goats starter Jack Wynkoop (2-3) was charged for four runs and nine hits in six innings.

• High-A Lynchburg pounded out 16 hits, Zach Plesac pitched six shutout innings and the Hillcats beat Potoman, 12-0.

Lynchburg (21-18) opened a 6-0 lead in the third inning. RBI doubles from Luke Wakamatsu, Gavin Collins and Jodd Carter keyed the Hillcats’ big inning. Lynchburg added a run in the fifth, Anthony Miller hit a two-run home run in the sixth and the Hillcats tacked three runs onto their lead in the eighth.

Mayfield graduate Mitch Longo went 2-for-5 and scored a run.

Plesac (3-2) worked six shutout innings. He struck out three, allowed three hits and walked one. Three Lynchburg relievers combined to allow one hit in the final three innings.

Matthew Crownover lasted four innings for the Nationals. Crownover (1-4) allowed six runs and nine hits.

• West Michigan took an early lead and held Low-A Lake County at bay in a 7-1 win over the Captains (19-23).

The Whitecaps scored two runs in the second before Lake County answered with a run in the away third. West Michigan scored a run in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings while Jose Vazquez held the Captains to a run and six hits in five innings.

Dylan Rosa’s two-run home run in the seventh capped the Whitecaps’ victory.

Nolan Jones’ RBI single in the third plated Lake County’s lone tally. Felix Tati (0-2) was charged for five runs, four earned, and five hits in five innings.
