Ptak has been working with her team of six bakers for the last five days in the oversize kitchens of Buckingham Palace. She is not skimping on ingredients: some 200 Amalfi lemons will be used, as will 10 bottles of Sandringham Elderflower Cordial, which is made with elderflower from Queen Elizabeth II’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk.

The wedding cake for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will have an “ethereal” taste and an unusual display. Master baker Claire Ptak said Friday that the three-part layered lemon and elderflower cake would be presented in a non-traditional way. She said she’s not ready to reveal the design ahead of time and that the style was approved by Harry and Markle, who will wed later today at Windsor Castle.

Harry, 33, is sixth in line to the British throne. Markle, 36, is a divorcee whose mother is African-American and father is white. For many, the wedding is a fairytale. For some black Britons, it illustrates the breakdown of barriers in modern Britain. The hour-long ceremony begins at 1100 GMT, with weather forecasts predicting blue skies and sunshine. The bride will arrive at the church with her mother, Doria Ragland, 61, with whom she spent Friday night at a luxury hotel. Harry was staying at another hotel with elder brother and best man Prince William, whose daughter Charlotte and son George will be among the bridesmaids and page boys.

Prince Charles will walk Meghan Markle down the aisle at the royal wedding — stepping in after the father of the bride fell ill just days before the ceremony. Kensington Palace said Friday that Markle’s future father-in-law, the heir to the British throne, would walk the American actress down the aisle at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor for her wedding to Prince Harry.
