DES MOINES — Call it a triumphant face plant.
“It was worth it,” Mitchell Hall said his post-finish tumble.
Every bit of effort was necessary for the Cedar Rapids Jefferson 400-meter relay team. The foursome of James Baugh, Josue Bokoyo, Braxton Bolden and Hall edged Ankeny Centennial in a Class 4A race at the state track and field meet Saturday at Drake Stadium.
The margin of victory: 5-thousandths of a second. The J-Hawks were timed in 41.894 seconds, the Jaguars in 41.899.
“I was really anxious about it,” Bokoyo said. “I was watching the videoboard, and I didn’t know if we won it or not.
“I was just hoping before I saw them put the results on the board.”
Jefferson swept the 400- and 800-meter relays at the Drake Relays here three weeks ago. But the J-Hawks dropped the baton in the 800-meter relay Friday before salvaging this one.
Hall held off Centennial’s Riley Moss at the end.
“I heard him behind me,” Hall said. “I could feel him coming.”
Iowa City West led the team race for the majority of the weekend, but West Des Moines Valley passed the Trojans at the end, winning the 1,600-meter relay.
Valley finished with 60 points to win its second consecutive championship. West, which entered the day with a 19-point lead, was the runner-up with 57 points. Then it was Ames (52) and Waukee (51).
Cedar Rapids Kennedy was the first team to cross the line in the shuttle hurdle relay, but was disqualified. That moved Cedar Rapids Prairie up to second, behind champion Waukee.
Linn-Mar’s Trent Davis was the 110-meter hurdles runner-up, finishing in 14.42 seconds. Moss won it in 14.02.
