The Centre has criticised nine states including Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir and West Bengal over slow progress made by them in abolishing interviews from selection process for junior level government jobs.

Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh in a letter said to the Chief Ministers of Haryana, Nagaland, Odisha, Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, Jammu and Kashmir, and West Bengal that they were yet to effectively initiate the process of discontinuation of interview. As many as 20 states have already made a significant headway in this direction.

Dr Singh also cited the Independence Day speech of Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered on August 15, 2015 in his communication. In his speech, Mr Modi had called for the discontinuation of the practice of interview to bring transparency and ensure a level-playing field for aspirants from all sections and backgrounds.
