Liberal Alyssa Hayden wins local support for Darling Range tilt
Former MP Alyssa Hayden has won backing from Liberal party members in her bid to win the seat of Darling Range in the June 23 byelection.
WAtoday understands Ms Hayden won a tight preselection contest against Serpentine-Jarrahdale councillor Rob Coales on Saturday morning to take the nomination.
Ms Hayden had won the support of Liberal party heavy-hitters in her bid for the endorsement and was being supported by the party's powerful factions.
But there were questions over her ability to win over local preselectors.
Federal Attorney General Christian Porter, Aged Care Minister Ken Wyatt, and state frontbencher Zak Kirkup all circulated letters of support for Ms Hayden.
WA Labor was set to choose a candidate to fill the shoes of former Darling Range MP Barry Urban at a meeting of its state executive on Monday night.
On Thursday, WA Legislative Assembly speaker Peter Watson announced the Darling Range byelection would be held on June 23, with nominations closing on June 1.
