Monthly rankings for boxers

BFI assures enough exposure trips

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has said it will continue to look at various factors while selecting the squad for the upcoming Asian Games.

According to BFI general-secretary Jay Kowli, “A monthly ranking will be published in the first week of every month for better understanding of boxers’ current status.”

Kowli said selection for the Asiad would primarily take into account performances at all National and international competitions from January 1 to June 25.

Performances at the competitions since the Commonwealth Games, with weightage for top international events, would be given more importance, he said in a statement.

The BFI would ensure there are enough opportunities for the boxers who are considered candidates for the Asian Games, he said.

The women’s team left for Italy on Friday night, while the men’s squad sets off for Ireland on Sunday for training camps, he said.

The BFI also plans to send the boxers to the President’s Cup and the Umakhanov memorial tournament in the first week of June along with tournaments in Mongolia.

The committee will visit the National camp on May 31 (for men) and June 16 (for women).

“The committee also takes into account other factors such as developmental curve, performance in camp, physical status, injury history and ability to maintain weight.”

The committee will meet on June 26 to make the selections.

“If required, trials will be conducted on June 28 and 29,” said Kowli.
